How to Plan a Wedding

You’re engaged. Congratulations! But once the champagne glasses have finished clinking you’ve got to get down to the business of planning a wedding. So where do you start? We’ve got some handy tips on how to plan a wedding.

Step 1 – As a couple decide what kind of wedding you’d like. Brainstorm all the things you’ve loved about weddings you’ve seen or been to. Do you want something rustic? A city wedding? Church or civil ceremony? Something traditional or something a little wacky? Your wedding should represent you both as a couple. So, it’s important to map out what kind of wedding you’d like, as all the other decisions will come from these ideas.

Step 2 – Set a budget. Most of us don’t have a limitless pot to pay for our wedding so it’s important to know from the start how much you’ve got to spend. Are you as a couple paying for the whole wedding or will there be support from parents? Know what that is and include it in your budget. Small budgets weddings are just as special and beautiful as the grandest you’ve ever seen. Be realistic about your budget and decide what’s important to you both.

Step 3 – Set a timeline and a date. Are you looking to get married in the next few months, or will the big day be in a year or two? Is it important to you that it’s a Saturday or can you be flexible on the day of the week? What season would you like to get married in? Spring and Summer weddings are typically more expensive than an Autumn or Winter wedding.

Step 4 – have an idea of numbers. You won’t know at this stage exactly who can and can’t make the big day. But write a list of all the people you’d like to attend. This will give you a starting point once looking at venues and crunching the numbers on catering price per head.

Once you’ve tackled the 4 steps above you can start to engage with your wedding suppliers. Use an on-line wedding planner app or a hard copy wedding planning book (I bet someone buys you one as an engagement present). The list can seem endless but there are some key categories as listed below:
